Visitation Committee Aids In Evaluation Of School A three-member visitation com mittee from the Commission on Colleges and Universities of the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools recently spent three days, October 20-22, at St. Alary’s as an important part ot the self-studv in which the faculty and staff haVe been engaged since last Februarv. The visitation team included Dean Cecil Abernethy, chairman, from Birmingham Southern College; Dean F. T. Len- festev, from Pensacola Junior Col lege;" and Dean Harriet Hudson, from Randolph-AIacon Woman s College. . In February of 1958 Dr. Rich ard Stone appointed a five-member steering committee whose purpose was to guide an institutional se f- study at St. Alary’s. Earlier in the •school vear St. Alary s had volun teered, ' along with many other -;outliern colleges and universities, to conduct a self-study to md the Commission when it conducts such «elf-studies in all members of the Southern Association beginning m 1960. The members ol tlie »t. Alarv’s Steering Committee were Air "Carl Cannon, chairman; Dr. Aloultrie Cuerry; Aliss Sarah Est her Jones; Dr. Alabel Alorrison; and Airs. John Cell. The essential jnirpose of the selt- .studv at St. Alary’s and the follow- ui) visit bv the Commission s team is the “improving of the education al effectiveness of and universities.” The self-study procedure was designed to help St. Alarv’"^ reassess its objectiyes, mea sure‘success in obtaining them, ex- jilore ways and means of more ef fective teaching, and prepare the way for ever increasing demands upon the college as an institution of higher learning. The program of self-study and iieriodic visitation, which the Commission hopes to initiate on a possible ten year cycle, permits each institution to measure itself, and then to be measured by the evaluating visiting committee through “identification of strengths and weaknesses, problems and so lutions.” And lastly, the self-study encourages jiarticipating institu tions (such as St. Alary’s) to pro ject its educational program into the future and to plan its growth within the framework of its pur poses. During the siiring, summer, and fall of this year, guided by the steering committee, various dejiart- ment study committees, special sub-committees, and the steering committee have been examining various aspects of life at St. Alary’s. Each teaching department appointed a sub-committee to study the pui’iioses, program, and needs of its department and to reiiort its findings and recommendations. Special sub-committees studied the infirmary, the dining hall, and the laundry. Another sub-committee, gathering recommendations from the faculty, trustees, alumnae, and friends of St. Alary’s, proposed a new statement of purposes for St. Alary’s. Another sub-committee, aided by members of the adminis tration, studied the administration and the administrative offices. 0th- (roiitiniual on PaRO 4.)
